NEW YORK: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Thursday that US President Donald Trump has directed American companies to immediately invest in Pakistan.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with the US president, the prime minister described the talks as “very good” and held in a “favourable atmosphere.”

Sharif quoted Trump as saying that US firms should “go to Pakistan and discuss investment opportunities,” with a focus on trade ties, joint ventures, and new projects. He said several agreements with American companies had already been signed.

The prime minister also thanked Trump for what he called a decisive role in helping avert conflict between Pakistan and India. He said Trump’s intervention ensured a ceasefire and prevented “disastrous consequences” in the region.

Sharif, accompanied by Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, met Trump in New York in what officials said marked a reset in relations after years of strain under the previous US administration.

Pakistan has identified agriculture, technology, mining, and energy as priority sectors for American investment. Trump has earlier called on US companies to explore for oil in Pakistan.

“The Prime Minister expressed confidence that under President Trump’s leadership, the Pakistan-US partnership would be further strengthened to the mutual benefit of both countries,” his office said in a statement.
