ISLAMABAD — Former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry has claimed that four senior PTI leaders currently behind bars had written to party founder Imran Khan nearly three months ago, urging him to help bring down the country’s political temperature.
Speaking on Geo News’ programme Naya Pakistan on Sunday, Chaudhry said the letter was signed by Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Ejaz Chaudhry, Dr Yasmin Rashid and Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed — all imprisoned in connection with cases stemming from the May 9, 2023 unrest. According to him, the letter reflected the jailed leaders’ view that confrontation between the PTI and the government should end through dialogue and political flexibility.

Chaudhry, who along with Imran Ismail and Mehmood Moulvi has launched a political “outreach initiative,” said the trio had been meeting incarcerated PTI leaders to advocate reconciliation. He revealed that the group recently visited Qureshi at a Lahore hospital to convince him to support their efforts but claimed Qureshi appeared hesitant.
Fawad added that easing tensions required “both sides to step back,” suggesting that the government should extend relief measures such as bail and better prison facilities for Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi. He also alleged that individuals exploiting Khan’s name on YouTube were profiting from his incarceration and hindering his release.

Meanwhile, Imran Ismail defended the outreach initiative in a post on X, dismissing allegations that it sought to sideline Khan. “There is no PTI without Imran Khan,” he wrote, insisting the campaign aimed to shift national politics from confrontation to reconciliation. He said most PTI stalwarts privately agreed that confrontation had failed to yield results.

However, Qureshi’s lawyer, Rana Mudassar, contradicted the claims, stating that no political discussion took place during the former leaders’ visit to the hospital. PTI insiders also denied reports of any consensus for compromise, reiterating that the party founder remains committed to pursuing his legal battle without striking deals.
