ISLAMABAD, Nov 12: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday issued notices to relevant authorities while hearing a contempt of court petition filed by senior lawyer Salman Akram Raja, who alleged that he was denied a meeting with Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan at Adiala jail despite a clear judicial order permitting it.

Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir presided over the hearing and sought an explanation from the concerned officials regarding the non-implementation of the court’s earlier directive.

Appearing in person, Mr Raja informed the court that despite the written order, the jail authorities had refused him access to his client. He stated that SHO Aizaz had failed to comply with the court’s instructions, adding, “The order was explicit, yet I was barred from meeting my client.”

Mr Raja also requested that the deputy registrar (judicial) accompany him to Adiala jail to ensure implementation of the court’s directive. However, Justice Tahir declined the request, observing that the court could not assign a judicial officer for that purpose. “We will issue notices, and action will be taken strictly according to the law,” the judge remarked.

During the proceedings, the bench summoned the assistant attorney general and questioned why the meeting had not taken place despite the IHC’s clear orders. Justice Tahir noted that if Mr Raja was unable to meet his client, it would impede his ability to assist the court effectively in the Twitter/X case involving the former prime minister.

The assistant attorney general assured the court that he would once again communicate the order to the relevant authorities to ensure compliance.

Subsequently, the IHC issued notices to the home secretary, the Adiala jail superintendent, and other respondents, seeking their replies before the next hearing. The proceedings were adjourned, with the next date to be announced through a written order.
