Islamabad has once again burst into a spectacle of colour, sound, and craftsmanship as the annual Lok Mela kicks off its ten-day run at the Lok Virsa grounds. Running from November 7th to 16th, the festival, organized by the National Institute of Folk and Traditional Heritage, is more than just an event; it is a vital, living portrait of Pakistan’s cultural diversity.
Under the theme “Yakjehti k Rang, Lok Virsa k Sang.” the festival grounds have been transformed into a microcosm of the entire nation. Distinctive provincial pavilions represent all federating units, including Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu & Kashmir. Visitors on Saturday flocked to witness master artisans at work, with woodcarvers from Chiniot, intricate embroidery workers from Balochistan, and potters from Hala showcasing their ancestral skills.

The event serves a dual purpose: to preserve heritage and to empower the artisans. It acts as a critical lifeline for traditional crafts that often struggle for recognition in a modernizing market. This year’s festival is notably marking the Golden Jubilee of Lok Virsa, underscoring its long-standing commitment to the folk arts.
Highlighting the spirit of national harmony, the evening of November 8th is dedicated to Balochistan Night, featuring the region’s deep rhythms and soulful dances. Other evenings will follow suit, dedicating a night to each province’s unique musical traditions. Furthermore, the festival has cemented its international appeal with a significantly expanded International Pavilion, hosting participants from around 12 foreign countries, thus turning the Lok Mela into a global cultural exchange.

Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture, Aurangzeb Khichi, emphasized that the Mela is a showcase of Pakistan’s “true soft power and creative strength,” providing a shared space where people from all backgrounds can celebrate their collective identity. With live performances, a traditional craft bazaar, and a feast of regional cuisine, Lok Mela 2025 stands as a celebration of Pakistan’s rich culture.
