ISLAMABAD, Sept 12 — The federal government has chalked out a coordinated action plan to check the recent surge in prices, prevent hoarding and profiteering, and ensure stability in essential supplies amid fears of panic buying and supply chain disruptions.

Key Highlights

  • Steering Committee on Inflation, chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, reviews surge in prices.
  • NDMA, SUPARCO, PBS, and provincial govts tasked with accurate crop damage assessments after floods.
  • Digital dashboard to monitor supply chain disruptions, hoarding, and profiteering.
  • Wheat stocks found sufficient; damage to rice and sugarcane crops termed manageable.
  • Govt pledges strict vigilance to protect low-income households from artificial shortages.

Action Plan Against Inflation

The Steering Committee for Assessment of Inflationary Trends, constituted by the Prime Minister, held its second meeting on Thursday under the chairmanship of Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb.

The meeting directed all relevant institutions — including NDMA, SUPARCO, and PBS — to work with provinces in completing timely crop damage assessments. The Ministry of National Food Security and Research will also closely track stock positions of essential commodities and share updates with the public to discourage panic buying.

A digital dashboard will be deployed to flag hoarding and supply chain disruptions. The collected data will be shared with law enforcement for swift action against profiteers.

Coordinated Measures to Protect People

The Petroleum Division will supply PBS with gas consumption data to improve inflation tracking. Meanwhile, the Finance Ministry emphasised that controlling prices and ensuring stability is among the government’s top priorities, especially for flood-affected and low-income families.

The Committee also:

  • Reviewed the Sensitive Price Index (SPI) basket of food items.
  • Noted sufficient wheat stocks (excluding reserves).
  • Assessed rice and sugarcane crop damage as manageable.
  • Stressed strict vigilance to curb market speculation.

Preparing for the Next Sowing Season

The Committee also reviewed preparations for the upcoming sowing season, calling for a proactive approach to ensure timely availability of seeds and inputs.

Finance Minister Aurangzeb underlined that protecting purchasing power through strict monitoring and timely policy responses will remain the government’s priority.

The Steering Committee will reconvene next week to review progress and take additional measures for ensuring price stability across Pakistan.
