Islamabad Lawyers Split Over Proposed Relocation of IHC to G-10

ISLAMABAD: A deep divide has emerged within the legal community of the federal capital over the possible relocation of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) from its current site on Constitution Avenue to its former premises in Sector G-10, as consultations gained momentum on Thursday.

The Islamabad High Court Bar Association (IHCBA) has strongly opposed the proposed move, insisting that the high court should continue operating from its existing building. The structure is currently hosting the newly-established Federal Constitutional Court (FCC), which was initially shifted there on a temporary basis but is now expected to remain functional at the location.

Amid the growing uncertainty, the IHCBA convened a meeting of its executive committee and announced a press conference scheduled for Friday. A day earlier, IHCBA President Syed Wajid Ali Gillani and Secretary Manzoor Ahmed Jajja met Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar to convey their reservations. The association said the minister assured them that the IHC would continue functioning in its present building “for the time being”.

In contrast, the Islamabad District Bar Association (IDBA) has welcomed the idea of shifting the high court to G-10. During a cabinet meeting chaired by IDBA President Naeem Gujjar, the association argued that the relocation would make court access easier for lawyers and expedite the production of prisoners—factors they believe could help accelerate judicial proceedings.

Following the meeting, the IDBA issued a statement calling for wider consultation within the legal fraternity. It announced a general body meeting on November 22, urging all lawyers to attend and provide input on the future location of the high court.

In a parallel development, an IHCBA delegation met FCC Chief Justice Aminuddin Khan and other judges on Thursday. Led by President Gillani and Secretary Jajja, the delegation visited the chambers of the chief justice, where all FCC judges were present. The bar representatives congratulated Chief Justice Aminuddin, Justice Arshad Hussain Shah, Justice Rozi Khan and others on assuming their new roles, presenting them with bouquets during the visit.

As both bar associations continue to build momentum around their respective positions, the debate over the IHC’s future location is expected to intensify in the coming days.
