KARACHI: The Sindh government on Tuesday inaugurated a direct operational connection between the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Orange Line and the BRT Green Line, a move aimed at improving urban mobility and reducing travel costs for commuters in Karachi.

The inauguration ceremony was held at the Orange Line depot, where Sindh Senior Minister and Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon said the integration would allow passengers to travel from Orangi Town to Numaish on a single ticket. Previously, commuters were required to pay separate fares when switching between the two lines.

“The Orange Line connects Orangi Town to North Nazimabad, while the Green Line runs from Surjani Town to Numaish via North Nazimabad. With this linkage, citizens can now complete their journey on one fare,” Mr Memon said. He added that the facility would benefit around 100,000 passengers daily and significantly improve travel convenience.

Speaking to the media, the senior minister said ridership on the Green Line had increased from around 55,000 passengers per day during the previous federal government’s tenure to approximately 80,000 at present. He attributed the rise to improved services and affordable fares, noting that thousands of citizens relied on the BRT system for daily commuting.

Mr Memon said the BRT buses were equipped with security cameras and other passenger facilities. He also announced that separate buses for women would be operated on both the Green and Orange Lines to enhance safety and comfort for female commuters.

Announcing further additions to the city’s transport system, the minister said double-decker buses would begin operating in Karachi from Wednesday. According to him, the initial route would run from Malir to Sharea Faisal, and more double-decker buses would be introduced in phases to help ease traffic congestion. He also said new electric vehicle (EV) buses had arrived and would be added to the fleet as part of efforts to modernise public transport.

Responding to questions, Mr Memon referred to an earlier announcement by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif regarding the provision of 150 buses for Karachi and urged the federal government to fulfil the commitment. He also stated that no encroachment on government land would be allowed.

The minister also touched on security-related issues, saying recent operations by the Sindh Police and intelligence agencies had prevented acts aimed at harming civilians. He urged parents to remain vigilant about their children’s activities, particularly on social media.

Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, Sindh Mass Transit Authority Managing Director Kanwal Nizam Bhutto, and other officials were also present at the ceremony.
