Wapda XEN abducted in Bannu

BANNU: Unidentified terrorists on Wednesday abducted an executive engineer of the Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) from a road in Bannu, official sources said.

Wapda headquarters in Lahore confirmed that Arif Usman, Executive Engineer (XEN Civil), Lahore, had been kidnapped. According to a notification issued on January 5 by General Manager (Hydro) Planning Lahore, Naeem Qadir Mangi, Mr Usman informed the office via WhatsApp that he had been detained by armed men while returning to Lahore after offering evening prayers.

Official sources said the abductors were aware of his status as a government and Wapda employee and have demanded a ransom of Rs50 million for his release.

Meanwhile, the body of a kidnapped police constable, who was martyred by terrorists during captivity, was recovered from Sadakhel Road in Bannu on Wednesday.

The martyred constable, Naveed Akram, a resident of the Amalkhel area of Domel, had been abducted by terrorists from the football ground of his village. According to local residents, he had earlier received threats from militants, warning him to quit his job in the police.

Residents said community elders had also held negotiations with the abductors for the safe release of the constable, but the talks failed. Subsequently, he was killed and his body was dumped on Sadakhel Road.
