Pakistan Rejects Afghan Claims of Instigating Border Clash Near Chaman

ISLAMABAD – November 7, 2025

Pakistan on Thursday “strongly rejected” Afghanistan’s allegations that its forces initiated firing along the Chaman–Spin Boldak border, asserting that hostilities were triggered from the Afghan side and that the situation is now under control.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said, “Firing was initiated from the Afghan side, to which our security forces responded immediately in a measured and responsible manner.” The ministry added that the situation was swiftly stabilized due to the “responsible action” of Pakistani troops and reaffirmed that the ceasefire between the two countries remains intact.

“Pakistan remains committed to ongoing dialogue and expects reciprocity from Afghan authorities,” the ministry stated.

The allegations from Kabul were raised by Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid, who claimed Pakistani forces opened fire in Spin Boldak while delegations from both countries were engaged in peace talks in Istanbul. Mujahid said the Taliban forces refrained from responding “out of respect for the negotiation team and to prevent civilian casualties.”

The border tension comes as delegations from Islamabad and Kabul meet in Istanbul for the third round of talks mediated by Turkiye and Qatar. The discussions aim to extend and strengthen a ceasefire agreement reached on October 15 after five days of deadly clashes last month.

Relations between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban have deteriorated since the October 11 skirmishes, when an attack from Afghan territory killed several Pakistani personnel. Pakistan later launched strikes targeting the Gul Bahadur group in Afghanistan. Despite subsequent ceasefire efforts in Doha and Istanbul, a lasting agreement has yet to be finalized.

The Pakistani delegation in the current round of talks is led by Lt Gen Asim Malik, Director General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), and includes senior officials from the military, intelligence agencies, and the Foreign Office. The meetings are expected to continue through the week as both sides seek mechanisms for lasting border stability.
