LAHORE — Punjab’s Emergency Services Department (Rescue 1122) responded to 43,160 road traffic crashes across the province during the month of May, resulting in 434 fatalities and 23,013 serious injuries. Presiding over a review meeting on Monday, Emergency Services Secretary Dr. Rizwan Naseer expressed deep concern over the high volume of traffic accidents. Overall, the department managed 235,522 total emergencies and rescued 236,593 victims during the month.

According to the data presented by the head of operations, traffic collisions constituted the largest portion of the province’s overall emergency burden, followed closely by 44,024 cardiovascular cases. The breakdown of regional data revealed that major urban centers faced the highest accident rates, heavily driven by motorcycle involvement. Following Lahore’s peak numbers, Faisalabad reported 2,838 accidents, Multan recorded 2,793, Gujranwala logged 2,312, and Sheikhupura registered 1,578 crashes.
The review meeting also highlighted other critical emergency categories handled by the department, including thousands of gastro-intestinal, respiratory, and neurological cases, alongside 5,254 crime-related emergencies. Major districts also faced significant fire hazards, with Lahore leading at 760 fire incidents, followed by Faisalabad and Gujranwala.
In light of the extreme weather conditions, Dr. Naseer urged the public to take strict precautionary measures against the ongoing regional heatwave. He advised citizens to limit direct exposure to sunlight, stay well-hydrated, and exercise extreme caution when visiting water recreational sites to prevent drowning incidents during the hot season.
