The under-21 tournament will run from October 11 to 18, featuring six participating teams: Pakistan, India, Australia, England, Malaysia, and New Zealand. Since its inception in 2011, the Sultan of Johor Cup has grown into one of the most competitive junior hockey events globally, providing an important platform for emerging players.
Pakistan’s Tournament Schedule
The national junior side will open its campaign on October 11 against hosts Malaysia, followed by a match against England on October 12. After a rest day, Pakistan will take on India on October 14, a fixture that carries added significance given the historic rivalry between the two countries.
Pakistan will then play New Zealand on October 15, before concluding their group stage matches against Australia on October 17. The classification and final matches will be played on October 18.
Key Preparation for Young Players
The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) is expected to announce the national junior squad later today. Officials have described the Sultan of Johor Cup as an important opportunity for young players to gain experience ahead of the Junior Asia Cup and Junior World Cup.
Pakistan has previously won the tournament once, in 2014, while India has lifted the title three times, reflecting the strength of both sides at the junior level.
A Historic Rivalry
Encounters between Pakistan and India in hockey have always drawn large crowds and intense interest. While cricket often dominates the sporting rivalry between the two neighbours, hockey matches between them remain deeply rooted in history and emotion.
Last year, Great Britain clinched their fourth Sultan of Johor Cup title by defeating Australia in the final. Pakistan’s junior team will be aiming to make a strong impression this year and build momentum for upcoming international competitions.
