KARACHI: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested a passenger arriving from Cambodia at Jinnah International Airport, uncovering what officials described as a network involved in migrant smuggling and international online fraud with links to Southeast Asia.
According to a statement issued by the FIA on Saturday, the arrest was made by the agency’s immigration wing during a targeted operation at the airport. The suspect, whose identity was not disclosed, was taken into custody upon arrival from Cambodia.
Initial investigations revealed that the individual was allegedly involved in organised migrant smuggling and online fraud activities operating from Cambodia. The FIA stated that the suspect had travelled from Pakistan to Cambodia in September 2024, where he began working for an online fraud company. During his stay, he allegedly recruited individuals from Pakistan, persuading them to travel to Cambodia under false promises of employment.
“The suspect later began recruiting individuals from Pakistan as agents, allegedly facilitating their movement to Cambodia under false pretences,” the FIA said in its statement.
During forensic analysis of the suspect’s mobile phone, investigators recovered passport photographs of multiple individuals, along with payment receipts and records of financial transactions. The FIA said this evidence suggested the suspect played a key role in coordinating travel and financial arrangements for the network.
The agency further revealed that the suspect received funds through personal bank accounts as well as cryptocurrency wallets, indicating the use of multiple channels to move illicit proceeds and avoid detection.
Following his arrest, the suspect was handed over to the FIA’s Anti-Human Smuggling Circle in Karachi for further legal proceedings. Officials said investigations are ongoing to identify other members of the network and trace potential victims who may have been trafficked or defrauded.
“Further investigation is underway to identify other members of the network and potential victims,” the FIA added.

The arrest comes amid a broader crackdown on human smuggling across the country. In January, more than 30 FIA officers were booked and dismissed from service over allegations of collusion with human smugglers involved in sending Pakistanis abroad illegally.
The purge followed a tragic incident in December last year, when a boat carrying illegal migrants capsized near Greece. According to estimates, more than 80 Pakistanis drowned, while 36 were rescued. Several others were presumed dead.
In response, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordered strict action against human smugglers and officials facilitating such activities. Since then, authorities have launched a nationwide campaign, resulting in the arrest of dozens of suspects, including 177 human smugglers detained by FIA Lahore alone.
