The “Gull-e-Daoodi” Manifesto: When Horticulture Met High Art

Dec 26, 2025 | Art & Culture

By the evening of December 16, 2025, the Annual Chrysanthemum Flower Show at Lahore’s Jilani Park had transformed from a local horticultural tradition into a sophisticated site of “Eco-Art.” While the event is a winter staple, the 2025 wrap-up marked a definitive shift in how the city utilizes its public spaces to blend heritage, environmentalism, and national reflection.

The “Snow Corner” Paradox

The headline feature of 2025 was the “Snow Corner.” Traditionally a whimsical display, this year it served as a stark, structural art piece. Thousands of white Chrysanthemums were meticulously arranged to mimic the melting glaciers of the North.

n a city increasingly defined by its battle with winter smog, this installation became a pilgrimage site for “Eco-Activists.” It wasn’t just about pretty flowers; it was a living commentary on the fragility of the white peaks that sustain the plains.

The 2025 show saw a departure from the simple row display. Instead, we saw “Floral Sculptures” and “Mughal-style Gates” constructed entirely from 200 varieties of Chrysanthemums.

A massive “Floral Guard Fountain” became the centerpiece of the 16th’s closing ceremony. It used the structural rigidity of the Gull-e-Daoodi to recreate the movement of flowing water—a “low-tech, high-art” masterpiece that garnered attention from international landscape designers.

The “Green” Economy

On Monday, December 15, the dialogue turned professional. A sideline seminar for floriculture experts highlighted the economic muscle behind the petals. Experts noted that Pakistan’s growing prowess in breeding, specifically the varieties showcased by groups like GC University and Bagh-e-Jinnah, is positioning the country as a major export competitor to the Netherlands and Kenya. For the niche collector, the flower is no longer just a hobby; it is a burgeoning $60 billion trade opportunity.
