Iran’s Race to Appoint a New Supreme Leader

Mar 2, 2026 | Current Affairs

TEHRAN — Following the seismic assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed on Monday, March 2, 2026, that the nation is moving at “lightning speed” to fill the ultimate seat of power. Under Article 111 of the Iranian Constitution, a temporary council has already taken the reins, but a permanent successor could be named in as little as 48 hours.

The “Triumvirate” Interim Council

Until the Assembly of Experts (an 88-member body of senior clerics) formally elects a new leader, a three-person council is exercising the Supreme Leader’s absolute authority:

  • Masoud Pezeshkian: The reformist President of Iran.
  • Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i: The hardline Chief Justice.
  • Ayatollah Alireza Arafi: A senior jurist from the Guardian Council and head of Iran’s seminaries.

Frontrunners for the Supreme Leadership

While the process is opaque, several names have surged to the forefront of the clerical deliberations:

Candidate Background Significance
Mojtaba Khamenei Second son of the late leader. Represents the strongest link to the previous era, though his appointment would challenge the “anti-hereditary” principles of the 1979 Revolution.
Ayatollah Alireza Arafi Current interim council member. A “safe” establishment choice who already holds significant institutional leverage within the seminaries and the Guardian Council.
Sadiq Larijani Former Chief Justice & Chairman of the Expediency Council. Part of a powerful political dynasty; viewed as a traditionalist who can bridge the gap between hardliners and the bureaucracy.
Hassan Khomeini Grandson of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. The “legacy” candidate. While popular with some reformers, he has previously been sidelined by the Guardian Council.

A Nation Under Siege

The succession comes at a time of unprecedented military pressure. While the Assembly of Experts meets in secret, Israeli and U.S. airstrikes continue to target command centers across Tehran.

  • The “Decapitation” Risk: Analysts suggest the Assembly may meet in an underground or highly secure location (possibly in the holy city of Qom) to avoid further targeted strikes during the transition.
  • The IRGC Role: The Revolutionary Guard is expected to act as the ultimate kingmaker, ensuring that whoever is chosen maintains the “Revolutionary” commitment to regional resistance and the missile program.

Declaration of “War Against Muslims”

Acting President Pezeshkian, in a televised address, framed Khamenei’s death as a “declaration of war against the entire Muslim world,” signaling that the new leader will inherit a nation already fully mobilized for a prolonged regional conflict.
