Khawaja Asif Warns Kabul After Istanbul Talks Collapse; UN Voices Concern

ISLAMABAD, October 29,2025: Defence Minister Khawaja Asif on Wednesday issued a stern warning to Afghanistan’s Taliban-led government, saying that any attempt to test Pakistan’s resolve “will be met at your own peril,” following the collapse of peace talks between the two sides in Istanbul.

The minister’s remarks came hours after Information Minister Attaullah Tarar confirmed that the latest round of negotiations, mediated by Turkiye and Qatar, had failed to produce results. The talks aimed to address Pakistan’s concerns over cross-border terrorism originating from Afghan soil.

In a strongly worded post on social media platform X, Asif said Pakistan had endured “treachery and mockery for too long” and cautioned Kabul that any further terrorist attacks inside Pakistan would invite a “bitter response.” He accused the Taliban government of pushing Afghanistan toward another conflict to sustain its “war economy,” asserting that Pakistan would not hesitate to defend itself.

He further claimed that the Taliban leadership had “misread Pakistan’s resolve,” saying that the country would not need to use even a fraction of its full capabilities to respond effectively. Referring to Afghanistan’s reputation as the “graveyard of empires,” Asif said the country had “been a playground of empires throughout history, not a graveyard for them.”

The United Nations expressed concern over the breakdown of the talks. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told reporters in New York that the organisation hoped the “fighting will not renew,” stressing the need for continued dialogue.

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have escalated in recent weeks, following cross-border attacks and retaliatory strikes. Pakistan has accused the Taliban government of harbouring militants responsible for attacks on its soil — a charge Kabul denies.

The Istanbul dialogue followed an earlier meeting in Doha that produced a temporary ceasefire. However, Pakistani officials said the Afghan delegation “backtracked” on key points during the latest round.

Tarar said Islamabad would continue to take “all necessary measures” to protect its citizens, adding that the Taliban must fulfil commitments made under the Doha Agreement.
