LAHORE: An Additional District & Sessions Court in Lahore has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of a young woman who rejected his marriage proposal. The verdict was announced on Saturday by Additional District & Sessions Judge Shoaib Anwar Qureshi, who relied heavily on forensic evidence and the testimonies of eyewitnesses presented by the prosecution.

The convicted man, Ihsanullah (24), a permanent resident of Gujrat, was found guilty of killing Hina (22) in her beauty salon. The incident, which led to an FIR being registered by Gulshan-i-Ravi police on January 30, 2023, shocked the local community.

According to the prosecution’s case, the motive behind the heinous crime was Hina’s refusal of Ihsanullah’s marriage proposal. The accused launched a ferocious attack on Hina using a dagger inside the salon, in the presence of two key eyewitnesses. The victim sustained a devastating 12 wounds on her body, which proved fatal.

Following the murder, Ihsanullah reportedly attempted to take his own life with the same weapon but survived the self-inflicted injuries. Police arrived at the scene and immediately arrested him.

In his observations, Judge Qureshi noted that the prosecution had been successful in proving its case against the defendant beyond a reasonable doubt, specifically establishing the motive for the woman’s murder. The court decisively rejected the defence’s claim that unknown assailants were responsible for the killing and that Ihsanullah was merely present in the salon to meet the woman when he was also injured.

In addition to the life sentence, the judge ordered Ihsanullah to pay Rs500,000 as compensation (Diyat) to the legal heirs of the victim. The convict is already behind bars, where he has remained since his arrest at the crime scene.

This judgment sends a strong message regarding the consequences of crimes stemming from rejection and obsession, bringing a measure of closure to the victim’s family after a lengthy legal process.
