Fact Check: Viral Video Misrepresented as Footage of Recent Shelling in Leepa Valley

ISLAMABAD, October 28, 2025 — A video circulating on social media, purportedly showing recent cross-border shelling between Pakistan and India in the Leepa Valley along the Line of Control (LoC), has been found to be old footage from earlier this year, a fact-check has revealed.

The video was widely shared on Monday by multiple pro-Indian and pro-Afghan accounts on X (formerly Twitter), with captions claiming that it depicted fresh clashes between Pakistani and Indian forces. The posts collectively garnered tens of thousands of views. Some users alleged that Indian forces had “destroyed Pakistani posts” in retaliation for “unprovoked firing” in the Tangdhar sector, while others claimed it showed “precision strikes” by the Indian Army.

However, a keyword and reverse image search established that the same footage was first uploaded on May 9, 2025, during the Pakistan–India standoff earlier this year. At the time, the clip had been shared by several journalists and social media users, including Geo News correspondent Murtaza Ali Shah, who identified it as showing live firing between the two sides. No evidence indicates that the video pertains to the latest reports of shelling in Leepa Valley.

While both Pakistan and India exchanged fire over the weekend — with local residents in Azad Jammu and Kashmir reporting intense shelling late Sunday — there has been no verified visual evidence released from the current incident.

In May, tensions between the two countries had escalated following an attack in Indian-occupied Kashmir’s Pahalgam, prompting New Delhi’s “Operation Sindoor” and Pakistan’s retaliatory “Operation Bunyanum Marsoos.” The clashes then had resulted in heavy artillery exchanges and civilian displacement before a ceasefire was brokered through U.S. mediation.

Given the available evidence, the claim that the viral video shows the most recent cross-border shelling in Leepa Valley is false. The footage is from May 2025 and has been misrepresented in the context of the current situation.
