Multan Sultans Dispute Becomes Major Test for PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi

Lahore – October 27: The ongoing dispute between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Multan Sultans owner Ali Tareen has escalated into a defining challenge for PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, with the conflict now playing out publicly and threatening to overshadow preparations for next year’s Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Tensions intensified after it emerged that the PCB had issued a legal notice to Tareen last month, citing breaches of the franchise agreement. Tareen responded sharply on social media, accusing the PSL management of leaking the notice to “their favoured media” despite his attempts to keep the matter private.

“For the record, we received the legal notice on September 12 and sent a detailed reply,” Tareen wrote. “But then the PSL management decided to leak parts of the notice last week. Perhaps they mistook our restraint for weakness.”

Shortly after his statement, the PCB reiterated that franchise renewal offers would only be extended to teams fully compliant with contractual obligations. The board’s announcement followed a meeting between Naqvi and representatives from audit firm Ernst & Young, which is assessing the PSL’s overall and franchise valuations.

Sources told Dawn that Tareen has sought the intervention of politicians and fellow franchise owners to mediate the dispute. His criticism of the PCB has grown steadily over recent months, focusing on declining fan experiences, limited innovation, and what he described as “mediocrity” in league management.

The PCB, meanwhile, suspects that Tareen’s public criticism aims to undermine the PSL’s valuation process and devalue his franchise. Board officials have also accused him of remaining silent during official meetings while attacking the PCB’s policies online.

Tareen, who became the sole owner of Multan Sultans after the death of his uncle Alamgir Tareen in 2023, dramatically tore up the PCB’s legal notice on camera — a gesture seen as a direct challenge to the board’s authority.

With Naqvi already engaged in a separate diplomatic standoff with India’s cricket board over the Asia Cup trophy dispute, his handling of this domestic controversy is expected to signal how firmly he can assert control. The outcome of the Multan Sultans saga may not only define Naqvi’s leadership but also set a precedent for future relations between the PCB and PSL franchise owners.
