Atmospheric Triggers and Regional Impact
According to the meteorological advisory, a potent western disturbance is expected to move across the upper regions of Pakistan on Thursday, persisting through Saturday. This system will be intensified by moist air currents moving in from the Arabian Sea, which are projected to penetrate the country’s central and northern territories.
The convergence of these weather systems will trigger scattered to heavy precipitation, intense windstorms, and isolated hail across multiple provinces:
- Punjab & Islamabad: Capital territories alongside major cities like Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, and Multan will experience turbulent weather with occasional gaps.
- Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Areas including Peshawar, Swat, Abbottabad, Mardan, and Chitral are marked for severe conditions.
- Kashmir & Gilgit-Baltistan: Mountainous valleys, including Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Skardu, and Gilgit, face unstable weather.
- Balochistan & Sindh: Dust and windstorms will sweep through northeastern Balochistan (Zhob, Ziarat) and upper Sindh (Sukkur, Larkana).
Public Safety Risks and Mitigation Measures
The met office warned that the combination of lightning, hail, and high-velocity winds could compromise weak structures, specifically mentioning high-rise billboards, electrical poles, and solar panel arrays. Additionally, heavy downpours present a significant threat of urban flooding in low-lying sectors of Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Lahore, and Faisalabad, while mountainous zones in upper KP, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir face potential landslides.
In response to the forecast, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Punjab ordered all regional administrations to secure round-the-clock staffing at control hubs. Line departments have been ordered to deploy additional rescue assets to high-risk areas, utilize media channels for rapid safety broadcasts, and maintain constant situation reports to streamline post-weather analysis.
