ISLAMABAD (April 11, 2026) — The federal capital has been placed under an unprecedented security blanket as the Pakistan Army formally took control of the Red Zone today. In a significant escalation of the security apparatus, the total number of deployed personnel has been increased to 16,000, up from the initially planned 10,000, to safeguard the high-stakes peace talks between the United States and Iran.

At a Glance: The Red Zone Lockdown
-
Security Surge: 16,000 personnel, including Army, Rangers, Frontier Constabulary, and elite police units, are now on duty.
-
Sealed Perimeter: The high-security zone—spanning from Third Avenue to Faisal Avenue and Margalla Road to the Srinagar Highway—is completely sealed for 48 hours.
-
Local Holiday: The district administration has extended the local holiday through Saturday, April 11, to minimize civilian movement.
-
VVIP Routes: Multi-layered cordons have been established along the corridors from Islamabad International Airport and Nur Khan Airbase to the summit venue.
Army Takes Command
In a move reflecting the sensitivity of the “Islamabad Venue,” the Pakistan Army has assumed direct responsibility for the inner sanctum of the Red Zone. Troops have been stationed at all key government installations and high-vantage points, including the Margalla Hills. Pickets manned by a joint force of Rangers and FC are conducting 24-hour patrols, while the Interior Ministry has established a dedicated central control room at the Convention Centre to monitor the proceedings.
Advance Teams and Logistics
The 30-member U.S. advance team, which includes specialized security personnel and tactical equipment, is currently operating from the U.S. Embassy in the Diplomatic Enclave. Simultaneously, the federal government has implemented a Visa on Arrival policy for all authorized delegates and international journalists to ensure the smooth arrival of technical teams as the two-week ceasefire remains under visible strain.
Traffic Diversions & Public Advisory
Authorities have warned of strict movement restrictions through Sunday. Major road closures include:
-
Srinagar Highway: Closed from Zero Point to Serena Chowk.
-
Jinnah Avenue: Closed from Khayaban Chowk to Blue Area.
-
Club Road & Kashmir Chowk: All access restricted to official VVIP convoys.
-
Koral Chowk & Expressway: Diversions in place for the movement of foreign delegations.
With the first round of formal negotiations between Vice President JD Vance and the Iranian delegation set to commence today, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has directed that “exceptional hospitality” be paired with “foolproof security” to maintain the integrity of the peace process.
