DHAKA: Bangladesh’s interim government has again requested India to Extradition Request for Hasina, who was sentenced to death earlier this week on charges of crimes against humanity linked to a deadly crackdown on a student-led uprising in 2024.
Touhid Hossain, the interim administration’s foreign affairs chief, confirmed on Sunday that Dhaka had sent a fresh letter to New Delhi seeking Hasina’s return. Local media reported that this was the third formal request since the former premier fled Bangladesh and took refuge in India following her ouster in August 2024.
Hasina, 78, had long enjoyed strong support from India during her tenure, a factor that has complicated the extradition issue. After the verdict was announced on Monday, Bangladesh’s foreign ministry said India had an “obligatory responsibility” under a bilateral treaty to facilitate the process. India’s foreign ministry has so far only said it has “noted” the judgment, without commenting directly on the request.
The political landscape in Bangladesh has remained volatile ahead of elections expected in February 2026. According to UN estimates, as many as 1,400 people were killed during the crackdown on protests as Hasina attempted to retain power, a central element of the prosecution’s case against her. Relations between India and Bangladesh deteriorated sharply after her removal, though signs of limited thaw emerged during a recent security summit in New Delhi, where Bangladesh’s National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman met his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval.
