KARACHI/HYDERABAD: Four major hospitals in Sindh have reported 103 deaths from mosquito-borne diseases in 2025, sharply contradicting official figures of 33 deaths from dengue and malaria.
According to hospital data, 83 deaths occurred in Karachi, while the remaining were recorded in Hyderabad. Indus Hospital reported 40 deaths from dengue and 23 from malaria. SIDH&RC reported 14 dengue deaths, AKUH recorded six, and LUH reported 25 fatalities.
The surge in cases was particularly pronounced from August to November, coinciding with seasonal peaks for dengue and malaria. “Many patients presented in critical condition, with co-infections or severe disease,” said Dr Samreen Sarfaraz of Indus Hospital.

Official Sindh health department data, however, lists 20,502 dengue cases with 33 deaths and 283,140 malaria cases with no reported fatalities. The discrepancy highlights gaps in provincial data collection and surveillance.

Experts warn that early detection and treatment are critical. Dr Sarfaraz stressed, “High parasitic loads in untreated malaria patients can be fatal. Similarly, dengue can rapidly progress to life-threatening complications without prompt care.”
Authorities are urging residents to maintain mosquito control measures, including draining stagnant water and using mosquito nets and repellents.
