On Monday, February 23, 2026, a brutal multi-stage terror attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Karak district resulted in the martyrdom of three Federal Constabulary (FC) personnel. The incident is being condemned across the political spectrum as an “inhumane and cowardly” act due to the deliberate targeting of medical transport.
The Sequence of Events
According to Karak District Police Officer (DPO) Saud Khan, the attack unfolded in two phases near the Dargah Shaheedan area in Bahadar Khel:
- Drone Strike on FC Fort: Terrorists belonging to the banned TTP (Fitna al-Khawarij) launched an initial attack on an FC fort using a drone. This strike injured several personnel stationed at the facility.
- Ambulance Ambush: As Rescue 1122 ambulances were transporting the wounded to the hospital, the militants launched a second, more lethal assault.
- Arson and Brutality: The assailants fired upon the ambulances and subsequently set the vehicles ablaze while the wounded personnel were still inside. Rescue staff were also targeted during this second phase.
Casualties and Medical Response
- Martyrs: 3 Federal Constabulary (FC) personnel.
- Injured: Several Rescue 1122 officials and FC personnel were wounded.
- Hospitalization: The injured were rushed to the Khalifa Gul Nawaz Hospital in Bannu, which has been on high alert following multiple recent attacks in the region.
State and Political Reaction
The attack has triggered sharp rebukes from national and provincial leadership:
- President Asif Ali Zardari: Stated that “firing on an ambulance cannot shake the national resolve” and paid tribute to the fallen soldiers.
- Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari: Condemned the act as “inhumane,” noting that targeting the wounded is a rejection of Islamic teachings.
- KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi: Termed law and order a “common challenge” and ordered the best possible medical care for the survivors.
- KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi: Saluted the “brave sons” who sacrificed their lives and labeled the incident a “cowardly act against humanity.”

The Crisis in KP
This attack follows a weekend of intense violence in the province:
- Feb 21: Martyrdom of Lt Col Shahzada Gul Faraz and Sepoy Karamat Shah in Bannu.
- Feb 22: Pakistan’s retaliatory airstrikes in Afghanistan, which killed over 80 terrorists.
- Regional Statistics: The ISPR recently noted that 80% of all terrorist incidents in Pakistan are currently concentrated in KP, blaming a “politically permissive environment.”
Current Status
A major search and sanitization operation was launched by security forces in the Karak district immediately following the attack. While the vicinity has been cleared, the region remains on Red Alert as the “relentless counter-terrorism campaign” under Vision Azm-e-Istehkam continues.
