Attack on Tehran University, Iran Issues Ultimatum to U.S. Regional Universities

Mar 30, 2026 | Iran, USA

On the morning of Monday, March 30, 2026, the Iranian Foreign Ministry confirmed that the Tehran University of Science and Technology and Isfahan University were targeted in high-precision airstrikes. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baqaei characterized these attacks as a “systematic attempt to dismantle Iran’s scientific and cultural foundations,” claiming the “nuclear threat” narrative was merely a pretext for destroying the nation’s intellectual elite.

The Revolutionary Guard’s (IRGC) “Red Line” Ultimatum

In a chilling escalatory move, the IRGC has issued a formal threat against American-affiliated educational institutions across West Asia (the Middle East):

  • The Target List: The IRGC declared that all American and “Zionist-affiliated” universities in the region are now legitimate military targets. This specifically puts institutions like the American University of Beirut (AUB), American University of Sharjah (AUS), and Texas A&M / Carnegie Mellon campuses in Qatar on high alert.
  • The “1-Kilometer” Warning: Staff, students, and local residents have been advised to maintain a minimum distance of one kilometer from these campuses to “protect their lives.”
  • The Noon Deadline: The IRGC demanded an official U.S. statement condemning the bombing of Iranian universities by 12:00 PM Tehran time today (March 30). Failure to do so, they warned, would result in “retaliation in kind”—specifically targeting two regional universities for every one Iranian university struck.

Targeting “Dual-Use” Research?

While Iran claims these are purely cultural and scientific centers, the U.S.-Israeli coalition has previously argued that major Iranian universities house laboratories used for ballistic missile telemetry and centrifuge component testing:

  • Tehran University of Science and Technology: Known for its advanced engineering and metallurgy departments, which Western intelligence has long linked to the IRGC’s aerospace programs.
  • Isfahan University: Located near the sensitive Natanz and Isfahan nuclear clusters, it is home to several high-profile research projects involving advanced materials.
