5 Policemen Injured in Roadside IED Blast in Lakki Marwat

Apr 7, 2026 | Terrorism

LAKKI MARWAT — A targeted improvised explosive device (IED) attack on a police patrol left five personnel, including an officer, injured in the Shahbazkhel town of Lakki Marwat on Tuesday. The explosion, which occurred on the critical Bannu-DI Khan section of the Indus Highway, is the latest in a series of violent strikes against law enforcement in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Key Highlights

  • The Incident: An IED hidden on a motorcycle parked along the roadside was detonated as a police van from the Shahbazkhel station passed by.

  • Casualties: One Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) and four constables sustained injuries; all have been moved to the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital.

  • Perpetrators: Police spokesperson Qudratullah confirmed the attack was carried out by Fitna al Khawarij (the state’s designation for the banned TTP).

  • Security Response: A large police contingent has cordoned off the area, launching a massive search operation to track the attackers.

The Anatomy of the Attack

The blast was heard across the town, shattering the windows of the police patrol vehicle and causing significant structural damage to the van. District Police Officer (DPO) Nazir Khan, alongside experts from the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) and the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS), inspected the site shortly after the explosion.

Evidence suggests the motorcycle was strategically placed to maximize damage on the Indus Highway—a high-traffic artery connecting Peshawar to Karachi. Following the inspection, the DPO issued strict directives to beef up security at all entry and exit points of the district.

A Rising Tide of Violence in KP

The attack in Lakki Marwat is part of a broader, alarming trend of militancy targeting security forces in the province. According to the Annual Security Report 2025 by the CRSS:

  • Fatality Surge: Violence-related deaths in KP rose from 1,620 in 2024 to a staggering 2,331 in 2025.

  • High-Risk Zones: Districts such as Bannu, Peshawar, Karak, and Bajaur have become frequent flashpoints for IEDs and targeted ambushes.

Strategic Implications: ‘Azm-e-Istehkam’

This latest strike comes as the federal government reinforces its commitment to Operation Azm-e-Istehkam. Law enforcement agencies believe that Fitna al Khawarij is attempting to disrupt the state’s efforts to stabilize the southern districts of KP, particularly as the government rolls out digital surveillance projects like the Safe City initiative in neighboring Dera Ismail Khan.

The use of “soft targets” like roadside patrols indicates a shift in militant tactics toward low-cost, high-visibility attacks designed to demoralize the police force and create a sense of insecurity among the public.
