Missing Pakistani Migrants Traveled on ‘Umrah Visas’ Before Mediterranean Tragedy

Apr 9, 2026 | Crime & Law

GUJRAT — A chilling investigation into the recent boat capsizing off the Italian coast has revealed that the majority of the 20 missing Pakistani nationals had bypassed traditional border checks by posing as Umrah pilgrims. Sources close to the investigation confirmed on Thursday that these individuals utilized religious and visit visas as a gateway to reach Libya, the final jumping-off point for their ill-fated journey toward Europe.

Key Findings of the Investigation

  • The Guise: Most victims left Pakistan 4–5 months ago using Umrah visas (Saudi Arabia) or visit visas for Azerbaijan, Egypt, and Uganda.

  • The Route: Migrants flew out of major airports in Islamabad, Lahore, Faisalabad, and Sialkot, eventually congregating in Libya to wait for a boat.

  • Human Trafficking Network: The FIA has identified at least six main agents based in Mandi Bahauddin (2), Sialkot (2), Gujranwala (1), and Gujrat (1) who orchestrated the smuggling ring.

  • Reluctant Families: Heirs of the missing individuals are reportedly hesitant to name the agents, fearing repercussions or holding out hope for their loved ones’ return.

The Breakdown of the Missing

Local sources have provided a regional breakdown of those feared lost at sea, painting a devastating picture of the impact on Central Punjab’s industrial and agricultural belts:

District Number of Missing Specific Regions
Mandi Bahauddin 7 Phalia and Malakwal tehsils
Hafizabad 4 Pindi Bhattian area
Sialkot 4 Including Sambrial tehsil
Gujranwala 3 City and surrounding areas
Gujrat & Wazirabad 2 Including Sook Kalan village

FIA Cracks Down on Trafficking Networks

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has been tasked with dismantling the networks that exploited these “vulnerable routes.” While the FIA Gujranwala Zone has yet to register formal cases due to a lack of complainants, officials indicate they may follow previous precedents where the state becomes the complainant to ensure traffickers do not escape justice.

The investigation has highlighted a sophisticated “staging” process:

  1. Phase 1: Legal departure from Pakistan via valid religious or visit visas.

  2. Phase 2: Transit through third countries (Egypt, Azerbaijan) to enter Libya.

  3. Phase 3: Months of waiting in “safe houses” run by Libyan militias and Pakistani agents.

  4. Phase 4: The “death voyage” across the Mediterranean in overcrowded, unseaworthy vessels.

A National Tragedy Amid Diplomatic Success

The discovery of this “Umrah guise” has sparked outrage, as it highlights how human traffickers exploit religious sentiments to facilitate illegal migration. While the nation prepares for Youm-i-Tashakur (Thanksgiving Day) to celebrate Pakistan’s role in the US-Iran ceasefire, the families in Gujrat and Mandi Bahauddin face a grim reality.

The IOM (International Organization for Migration) confirms that with nearly 1,000 deaths recorded in the Mediterranean so far in 2026, the route remains the deadliest in the world.
