The federal government has declared Wednesday, August 26, a public holiday to mark Eid Milad un Nabi, the observance of the 12th of Rabi ul Awal.

The holiday was made official by a notification of the Cabinet Division. The notification, a copy of which is available with Dawn, says the Prime Minister approved August 26, 2026, as a public holiday to celebrate Eid Miladun Nabi, falling on 12th of Rabiul Awwal 1448 AH. This notification is a follow-up to an earlier circular issued on 19th January listing public and optional holidays for the year.
Moon sighting committee sets date last week
Friday’s announcement wasn’t a surprise when it came to the date. Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad, Chairman of the Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee, said last week that the moon of Rabiul Awwal was not sighted on August 13. Based on that, the committee decided August 26 will be Eid Miladun Nabi. Friday’s Cabinet Division notification was simply a formal confirmation of the date as a public holiday, giving government offices, schools and businesses across the country an official day off to celebrate the occasion.
