The floodwaters in Punjab have reached alarming levels, displacing thousands and claiming more lives as heavy monsoon rains converge with water releases from India, pushing the region into a critical phase.
The Chenab River has turned into a raging torrent, with water flow at Marala Headworks surging past 549,000 cusecs, officially categorizing it as a high flood. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned that this massive surge is now headed towards Trimmu Headworks, threatening widespread devastation.
Meanwhile, the Sutlej and Ravi rivers are experiencing exceptionally high floods. The Sutlej at Ganda Singh Wala and the Ravi at Sidhnai pose significant risks to districts like Multan and Muzaffargarh, which are already reeling under the pressure of the disaster.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued urgent evacuation notices for residents living in low-lying areas and along riverbanks. Military and civil rescue teams are on high alert, standing by to respond to the escalating situation.
The human toll of this disaster continues to mount. According to official figures, 881 people have lost their lives, and 1,176 have been injured in monsoon-related incidents across the country since June. Punjab remains the hardest-hit, with 216 deaths reported, including 33 fatalities in the last week of August alone.
In just the past 48 hours, nearly 300,000 people have been evacuated, bringing the total displaced to over 1.3 million. In Multan division alone, more than 529,000 evacuees are currently taking shelter in relief camps. However, reports indicate a dire shortage of food, clean water, and sanitation facilities in these camps.
Emergency workers are racing against time to reinforce embankments and provide relief to those affected. Residents near riverbanks are being forced to flee their homes as water levels continue to rise. Authorities are warning that further water releases from India could exacerbate the crisis in the coming days, leaving little room for respite.
As the situation continues to deteriorate, the people of Punjab are bracing for the worst. With the death toll mounting and millions displaced, the need for immediate and sustained relief efforts has never been more pressing.
