Key Points
- Ban first imposed in April after regional tensions.
- This is the fifth consecutive extension.
- Includes both commercial and military Indian flights.
- Indian airlines face higher costs due to rerouting.
The restriction was originally introduced on April 24 amid heightened tensions between the two countries. Since then, successive extensions have kept Indian flights out of Pakistani airspace.
The move has forced Indian carriers to reroute long-haul flights to the Middle East, Europe, and North America, adding to fuel consumption, flight times, and overall operating costs. Air India earlier estimated the extended detours could result in losses worth hundreds of millions of dollars annually.
While the latest notification does not cite a reason, officials have maintained that the restrictions form part of Pakistan’s broader security and diplomatic response to India’s actions in the region.
