Islamabad – October 27: Riffat Ara Alvi, the mother of prominent journalist Arshad Sharif, passed away on Sunday, her family confirmed.

Arshad Sharif, who received the Pride of Performance award in 2019 from then-President Arif Alvi, was tragically shot dead in Kenya on October 24, 2022. His death prompted widespread calls from politicians and media organizations for a thorough investigation. However, the case has faced criticism for slow progress, with the Supreme Court and journalists highlighting the lack of accountability.

“Arshad Sharif’s mother, who was demanding justice for her son, has passed away,” his wife, journalist Javeria Siddique, wrote on X (formerly Twitter). She added that Riffat Alvi’s funeral prayers would be held today at 9pm at the H-11 graveyard in Islamabad.

Siddique, who has been vocal about pursuing justice for her husband, published an article in 2023 calling for an “independent, impartial, and immediate investigation,” stating, “Everyone is watching, and yet, justice only seems to become more and more elusive.”

Condolences poured in from political figures. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari expressed grief, saying he prayed for the forgiveness of the deceased. Former Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari lamented that Alvi “kept asking for justice till the very end but to no avail,” citing the “cruel apathy of the judiciary.”
