The award was presented by Colonel General Karim Valiyev, Azerbaijan’s First Deputy Minister of Defense and Chief of the General Staff, during an official visit to the General Headquarters (GHQ), Rawalpindi.
Medal Awarded on Behalf of Azerbaijani President
The medal, conferred on behalf of President Ilham Aliyev, honors Field Marshal Munir’s exceptional role in enhancing military cooperation between the two brotherly nations. It reflects Azerbaijan’s recognition of Pakistan’s consistent diplomatic and defense support, especially in times of regional conflict and post-conflict stabilization.
“This medal symbolizes the strength of our enduring military partnership and mutual trust,” stated Colonel General Valiyev during the ceremony.
Strengthening Strategic Ties
The high-level interaction was not limited to ceremonial recognition. Discussions between the two sides focused on:
- Bilateral defense cooperation, including training exchanges and defense production
- Regional security, with emphasis on stability in South and Central Asia
- Post-conflict peacebuilding in the South Caucasus, including the recent peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia
Field Marshal Munir reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering support for Azerbaijan and emphasized the importance of shared strategic values, military professionalism, and regional solidarity.
“Pakistan and Azerbaijan share deep-rooted fraternal bonds,” said Munir. “Our partnership is built on mutual respect, common goals, and the collective pursuit of regional peace.”
Broader Context: Defence Diplomacy in Focus
The conferment of the Patriotic War Medal highlights a broader pattern of Pakistan’s rising role in regional defense diplomacy. The Pakistan-Azerbaijan relationship has gained momentum in recent years through:
- Joint military exercises
- Counterterrorism collaboration
- Defense technology exchange
- Shared platforms at international security forums
Pakistan remains a vocal supporter of Azerbaijan’s territorial sovereignty and has consistently backed Baku in multilateral platforms, including during the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
