CHARSADDA/MANSEHRA: Three children lost their lives in two separate fire incidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Charsadda and Lower Kohistan districts, officials said on Thursday.

In Charsadda, two children died after a blast caused by a gas leak ripped through a house late on Wednesday night. According to Rescue 1122 officials, the explosion occurred at the residence of Ibrahim Khan, destroying one of the rooms.

As a result of the blast, Ibrahim Khan sustained injuries and was shifted to the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital, Charsadda, for treatment. His five-year-old son Rahimullah and six-year-old daughter Spogmai suffered severe burn injuries and later died.

Rescue officials said the explosion was triggered by a gas leak, though further investigations were underway to determine the exact circumstances of the incident.

In a separate incident in Lower Kohistan district, a one-year-old girl was burnt to death after a large house with around a dozen rooms caught fire in the mountainous Khanokheil area. An official of Rescue 1122 told reporters that the fire broke out due to an electric short circuit and spread rapidly, engulfing the entire structure.

“The flames quickly intensified and rose high into the sky,” Rescue 1122 official Mr Duraj said. He added that local residents rushed to the scene and managed to rescue several women and children from the burning house. Some people also sustained burn injuries while attempting to put out the fire and help those trapped inside.

However, the official said a one-year-old girl, who was asleep in one of the rooms at the time of the incident, could not be rescued. Her completely charred body was later recovered from the debris after the fire was brought under control.

Mr Duraj said the house, which accommodated several families, was completely destroyed in the blaze. He added that rescue teams carried out relief and search operations, while efforts were also made to provide medical assistance to the injured.

The incidents once again highlighted the risks posed by gas leaks and faulty electrical wiring, particularly during the winter season, when the use of heating appliances and overloaded power connections increases. Rescue officials have repeatedly urged residents to ensure proper maintenance of gas and electrical installations to prevent such tragedies.
