In a rare and sharply worded interview with The Economist, Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, Director General of ISPR, dismissed growing political rumours and issued a blunt warning to India, signaling a more assertive military posture from Pakistan.
- Responding to claims that Field Marshal Asim Munir is planning to become Pakistan’s next President, the DG ISPR called the speculation “completely baseless and fictional.”
- He reiterated that the COAS has no political ambitions, and there is no proposal under consideration to amend the Constitution for such a move.
- The remarks come amid political chatter, especially after the ruling coalition gained a two-thirds majority, sparking talk of a presidential shift. Chaudhry, however, rejected this as “detached from reality.”
On the India front, the DG ISPR issued one of the strongest deterrent statements in recent years.
- Asked how Pakistan would respond to Indian military aggression, he replied:
“This time, we will begin from the east.”
- He elaborated that Pakistan’s response would include “deep strikes inside India,” adding that India “must understand they can be hit anywhere.”
This message marks a clear departure from past restraint and reflects growing confidence in Pakistan’s deterrence capabilities. It comes amid fresh cross-border provocations and mounting concerns over India’s regional adventurism.
The message is clear: Pakistan is done playing defense—in politics and on the battlefield.
