Eid Gift for Islamabad, 5G Services Set for Launch

Mar 19, 2026 | Current Affairs

As of Thursday, March 19, 2026, Pakistan is officially entering the 5G era. Despite the regional tensions and the ongoing austerity measures, the government is pushing forward with this digital milestone to boost the country’s struggling IT sector and provide a high-speed “Eid gift” to citizens.

The Rollout Strategy

The PTA has finalized all technical and legal arrangements for a simultaneous launch by the three participating companies:

  • Phase 1 (Eid-ul-Fitr): Pilot activation in key sectors of Islamabad.
  • Phase 2 (Post-Eid): Expansion to provincial capitals (Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, and Quetta).
  • Speed Expectations: Early tests by Zong in Islamabad have already recorded speeds exceeding 1,400 Mbps, promising a massive jump from current 4G standards.

License Conditions & Obligations

To ensure the technology benefits the entire country and not just urban centers, the PTA has tied the licenses to strict rollout obligations:

  • Infrastructure: Each company must deploy 1,000 5G-enabled sites within the first phase of their rollout.
  • Rural Coverage: At least 20% (200 sites) must be located in remote or low-coverage areas to bridge the digital divide.
  • Spectrum Allocation: Jazz secured 190 MHz, Ufone 180 MHz, and Zong 110 MHz, significantly increasing the country’s total usable bandwidth.

Economic Impact

The $510 million raised from the auction provides a much-needed fiscal boost to the national exchequer during the current Gulf oil crisis.

  • IT Exports: The government anticipates that 5G will be a “digital highway” for freelancers and tech companies, helping to increase IT exports.
  • Device Availability: While 5G is launching, experts note that only about 15–20% of mobile users in Pakistan currently own 5G-compatible handsets. Market analysts expect a surge in affordable 5G smartphone imports following the Eid launch.

While the 5G news is exciting, the Ministry of Information Technology has reminded users that:

  1. SIM Upgrades: You may need a 5G-ready SIM card from your provider.
  2. Coverage Pockets: Initially, signals will be strongest in commercial hubs and specific residential sectors of Islamabad (e.g., F-6, F-7, G-11).
  3. Battery Drain: 5G typically consumes more battery power; ensure your device settings are optimized.
