Over 14,000 Flood-Damaged Schools in Sindh Still Await Restoration

Sindh — More than 14,000 schools damaged during the devastating 2022 floods in Sindh are still waiting to be rebuilt or repaired, despite ongoing reconstruction efforts under provincial, federal, and donor-funded programmes. Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah revealed on March 23, 2026, that out of 19,808 schools affected by the floods, work has started on 5,465 institutions — including 2,268 completely destroyed and 3,197 partially damaged — benefiting over 1.4 million students so far. However, 14,343 schools remain unrestored, according to official data presented during a high-level review meeting at the Chief Minister’s House.

CM Stresses Urgent Restoration of Education

Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah presided over the meeting and directed officials to speed up the reconstruction process so that every child in the province can return to a safe learning environment as soon as possible. He was briefed that multiple funding sources are being utilised, including the provincial Annual Development Programme (ADP), federal Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP), and support from international partners such as the EU, UNICEF, and JICA.

Under the ADP, work is underway on 2,405 schools, with 617 already completed. The Sindh School Education Investment Programme (Flood-Affected Component) covers 805 schools, while the federal PSDP targets 481 fully damaged institutions. Development partners have already rehabilitated 173 schools, with several more projects in progress.

Division-wise data showed Hyderabad as the worst affected, followed by Larkana, Sukkur, Shaheed Benazirabad, Mirpurkhas, and Karachi divisions. Districts like Khairpur, Naushehro Feroze, Larkana, and Kambar-Shahdadkot reported the highest numbers of damaged schools.

Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said, “Every damaged school represents disrupted education for our children. We must ensure swift reconstruction so that learning activities are fully restored across Sindh.”

The chief minister directed that resource allocation should be guided by district-level needs to ensure equitable and timely recovery. He also emphasised close coordination between departments to accelerate the pace of work and avoid delays.
