ISLAMABAD (April 30, 2026) — The Islamabad High Court (IHC) is set to begin hearing the appeals of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his spouse, Bushra Bibi, today against their convictions in the £190 million corruption reference. A division bench, led by Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Sarfraz Dogar and Justice Muhammad Asif, has fixed the high-profile appeals, Crl. Appeal 63/2025 and 64/2025, for a definitive hearing. The court had previously indicated it aims to resolve the matter swiftly, suggesting a potential decision within seven days if arguments proceed without delay.

Quick Facts

  • The IHC division bench will take up the main appeals alongside applications for sentence suspension.
  • Chief Justice Dogar has proposed a schedule of two hearings per week to expedite the case.
  • Imran Khan is currently serving a 14-year sentence, while Bushra Bibi was handed a 7-year term in this case.
  • The convictions were issued by an accountability court on January 17, 2025.
  • The case involves allegations of legalizing Rs50 billion in exchange for land and financial benefits from Bahria Town.

The Legal Battle Ahead

Today’s proceedings are expected to set the tempo for the final resolution of the Al-Qadir Trust case.

Counsel Barrister Salman Safdar is expected to argue for the suspension of the sentences while the main appeals are pending, citing procedural flaws in the initial trial.

During preliminary remarks, the bench emphasized that a structured timeline is necessary, urging the defense to “assist the court” in reaching a timely conclusion.

Imran Khan remains held at Adiala Jail, where he has been since August 2023, facing a litany of legal challenges, including the Toshakhana and Cipher cases.

Case Background

The £190 million reference, often called the Al-Qadir Trust case, centers on a 2019 settlement. It is alleged that the PTI-led government facilitated the adjustment of £190 million (approximately Rs50 billion) returned by the UK’s National Crime Agency to settle a Supreme Court liability of a major property tycoon. In return, the prosecution claims the Al-Qadir Trust—headed by the Khan couple—received nearly 458 kanals of land in Sohawa and significant monetary donations.

The outcome of today’s hearing will be a critical indicator of whether the former premier and first lady will receive immediate relief or if their legal battle will extend further into the summer.
