ISLAMABAD, May 12 — President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday paid rich tribute to Liaqat, a local shepherd who sacrificed his life to prevent a major suicide attack in Attock’s Jand tehsil. The incident occurred on Monday near a critical security post on the Punjab-Khyber Pakhtunkhwa border. Liaqat, while grazing his goats, intercepted a suspicious individual and confronted him; the suspect then detonated himself, claiming the shepherd’s life but preventing the attacker from reaching his intended target.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif lauded Liaqat’s sense of duty, stating that his bravery saved many lives and serves as a guiding light for the nation. He emphasized that citizens like Liaqat are the true backbone of the national resolve against terrorism. The Premier noted that by demanding identification from the suspect, the shepherd acted as a responsible first line of defense, setting a noble example of patriotism.
President Zardari echoed these sentiments, describing Liaqat as a “shining example” of collective awareness in the fight against militancy. He reaffirmed that the state remains committed to eliminating the scourge of terrorism and directed Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi to ensure the martyr’s family is looked after with complete national solidarity.
