For any landscape, forests are as essential as lungs to our body. That’s why it’s crucial to launch plantation drives across the country to increase the forest cover. The Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project has taken a step in this direction recently by launching a large plantation campaign. The campaign was launched on 14th August to mark the 79th Independence Day of Pakistan.
The goal of this drive is to plant 54,000 plants across the chosen area. For the plantation, the project administration has decided to prioritize native plant species. Native plant species are friendly to the indigenous environment. Planting foreign trees may cause environmental problems if plants do not suit the local environment.

Officials Lead the Campaign at the Site
General Manager and Project Director Fasihullah Paracha led the launch. He planted the first sapling at the project site. Several other officials joined him. These included the Chief Engineer (Civil), the Director of Agronomy, and the Director of Social Resettlement and Environment. Contractors’ representatives and senior security officials also took part.
Project officials said the campaign will help create a greener environment around the dam site. They said it will restore the natural landscape and cut down on pollution. The drive will also support local biodiversity and strengthen the surrounding ecosystem, according to officials.

About the Mohmand Dam Project
Mohmand Dam is being built on the Swat River in Mohmand, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It is primarily a project by WAPDA. Gezhouba Group Company (CGGC) and Descon Engineering Limited are jointly handling its construction.
Once finished, the multipurpose dam will have an installed capacity of 800 megawatts. It is expected to produce around 2.86 billion units of clean electricity every year. The project will also store roughly 1.29 million acre-feet of water.
Wider Benefits for Irrigation and Flood Control
The dam is expected to lower flood risk in the Peshawar Valley. It will irrigate nearly 18,233 acres of new farmland. It will also support irrigation for about 160,000 acres of land already under cultivation.
