PPP, PML-N to Move No-Confidence Motion Against AJK Government

ISLAMABAD — The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Monday announced their decision to jointly table a no-confidence motion against the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) government, citing governance failures and repeated crises in the region.

The announcement was made by PPP leader Qamar Zaman Kaira during a press conference in Islamabad alongside Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal and Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah.

Kaira said both parties, which are coalition partners in the federal government, had reached a consensus that the existing AJK setup had become a “source of crisis” instead of resolving public issues. “It has been decided that a no-confidence motion will be brought against the current AJK government, and the PPP and PML-N will act together,” he stated.

He added that while the PML-N had earlier chosen to sit in opposition in AJK, the PPP accepted that decision in the interest of cooperation and political stability. “The timing of the move will be finalised after consultation with the prime minister,” he said.

Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal described the current AJK administration as “completely unsuccessful,” saying that it had failed to meet the expectations of the people. He said the decision to replace it was driven by the need for good governance and effective service delivery. Rana Sanaullah echoed similar views, saying the lack of governance had repeatedly led to crises in the region.

The PPP is now expected to put forward its own candidate for the position of AJK prime minister, replacing incumbent Anwarul Haq. Party sources said the plan had been endorsed by President Asif Ali Zardari, who recently met AJK lawmakers and discussed the political transition.

Following the defection of 10 lawmakers from the forward bloc, the PPP’s strength in the 52-member assembly has reportedly risen to 27 — a simple majority needed to form the government.

If successful, this would mark the fourth change of premiership in AJK since 2021.
