ISLAMABAD, November 8: National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq on Friday informed a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) delegation that the issue of appointing the Leader of the Opposition in the lower house is currently “sub judice.”

The clarification came during a meeting at Parliament House between the speaker and a PTI parliamentary delegation led by party chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan. The group included former National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser and other senior PTI members.

Following the conviction of PTI leader Omer Ayub Khan in cases related to the May 9 unrest, the party had nominated Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai as its choice for opposition leader in the National Assembly.

An official handout issued by the NA Secretariat confirmed that detailed discussions were held on the matter and that the speaker informed the delegation the issue was under judicial consideration.

During the meeting, Sadiq underscored the importance of Parliament as a cornerstone of democracy and urged all political parties to strengthen it through constructive engagement. He stressed the need for cooperation between the government and opposition to address the political, economic, and social challenges facing the country.

The speaker reaffirmed his willingness to act as a bridge between the two sides to promote reconciliation and uphold parliamentary traditions. He also expressed hope that lawmakers from all parties would continue to contribute effectively to the legislative process in the national interest.

Meanwhile, the Senate also remains without an opposition leader following the conviction of Shibli Faraz. The PTI has nominated Allama Raja Nasir Abbas for the position.

Qaiser also expressed concern over judicial conduct, alleging political influence in court proceedings and delays in key cases.
