Pakistan Lands in Sri Lanka: World Cup Campaign Begins Under Boycott Cloud

Feb 3, 2026 | Sports

COLOMBO — The Pakistan national cricket team, led by Salman Ali Agha, arrived in Colombo on Monday, February 2, 2026, to begin their ICC T20 World Cup campaign. While the team has touched down safely, the tournament is already embroiled in a diplomatic storm following the Pakistan government’s decision to boycott the high-stakes clash against India scheduled for February 15.

Arrival and Immediate Schedule

The 15-member squad arrived via a chartered flight and was whisked to their hotel under high security.

  • Rest Days: The team is observing two days of complete rest (Monday and Tuesday) to recover from travel and the high-intensity T20 series against Australia.
  • Warm-up Fixture: Pakistan will take the field for their only official warm-up match against Ireland on Wednesday, February 4, at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) Ground.
  • Tournament Opener: The Green Shirts will open their World Cup quest against the Netherlands on February 7 at the same venue.

The Boycott: Solidarity and Sanctions

The government’s “selective participation” directive—allowing participation in the tournament but forbidding the match against India—has triggered an emergency response from the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The Official Stance:

  • Solidarity with Bangladesh: Islamabad’s boycott is a protest against the ICC’s decision to replace Bangladesh with Scotland rather than allowing Bangladesh to play in a “hybrid model” (neutral venues) after they refused to tour India.
  • ICC Response: The ICC held a virtual emergency board meeting on Monday. A spokesperson stated that selective participation undermines “sporting integrity” and warned that Pakistan will forfeit two points if they fail to take the field on February 15.
