PTCL Warns Users about Submarine Cable Repairs to Begin Tuesday; Evening Slowdowns Expected

ISLAMABAD (April 13, 2026) — Internet users across Pakistan may experience slower browsing speeds starting Tuesday, as the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) begins essential repair work on one of its major undersea fiber optic cables. The maintenance is expected to last for nearly a week, concluding on April 20.

At a Glance: The Connectivity Update

  • Repair Window: Tuesday, April 14 to Monday, April 20.
  • Peak Impact: Users are most likely to notice “service degradation” (slower speeds or lag) during the evening hours when internet traffic is highest.
  • The Cause: Routine but critical maintenance on one of the submarine cables that links Pakistan to the global internet.

How Pakistan Stays Connected

Pakistan relies on a total of six submarine cable systems that run deep under the ocean to provide high-speed internet. PTCL manages three of these networks. While the country has a total capacity of 13 Terabits per second (Tbps)—which is well above the usual daily usage of 7 to 8 Tbps—the temporary shutdown of one cable for repairs can create “bottlenecks” during busy times.

What to Expect

For the average user, this doesn’t mean the internet will go out completely. Instead, you might notice:

Slower Streaming: Buffering on YouTube or Netflix, particularly in the evening.

Gaming Lag: Higher “ping” or delays during online multiplayer games.

Social Media Delays: Images and videos taking longer to load on apps like Instagram or WhatsApp.

Why Now?

Submarine cables are the backbone of the global digital economy, but they require periodic repairs to ensure long-term stability. By scheduling this work now, technical teams aim to prevent more serious, unplanned outages in the future.

PTCL has assured the public that it is working to minimize the impact by shifting data traffic to other functional cables, though the “peak hour” slowdown remains a possibility until the work is finished next Monday.
