KARACHI: YouTuber Rajab Butt was physically assaulted on Monday at the sessions court in Karachi during a hearing related to a case registered against him for allegedly hurting religious sentiments, leading to scenes of chaos within the court premises.
Butt appeared before the sessions court (Central) following the expiry of his interim bail, which had been granted on December 20. During the proceedings, a disturbance broke out and Butt was reportedly attacked, forcing court officials and those present to intervene.
Butt’s legal counsel, Mian Ali Ashfaq, alleged that his client was assaulted by a group of lawyers inside the Karachi City Courts premises. In a statement shared on social media platform X, Ashfaq said the attack occurred in his presence and resulted in injuries to Butt. He claimed that despite repeated requests to stop, the assailants continued to beat his client.
Ashfaq condemned the incident, calling such behavior “unprofessional” and warning that taking the law into one’s own hands undermines the credibility of the legal fraternity. He said repeated incidents of lawyers engaging in violence against litigants would damage public trust and erode respect for the profession.
Videos circulated on social media following the incident showed Butt moving through a crowd with his shirt visibly torn. Another video showed him walking alongside a group of lawyers chanting slogans in support of the Karachi Bar. Among those present was Riaz Solangi, the complainant in the case against Butt. In the footage, Solangi alleged that Butt had previously used inappropriate language against lawyers in a video. Another individual, appearing to be a lawyer, was heard stating that the assault was a response to Butt’s remarks and conduct, warning against criticism of lawyers.

Both influencers are facing multiple legal proceedings.

Despite the disturbance, the sessions court extended Butt’s interim bail in the present case until January 13.
The case against Butt was registered earlier this year following a complaint lodged by Solangi at the Hyderi Market police station under Section 295-A of the Pakistan Penal Code, which pertains to deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings. According to the FIR, the complainant alleged that Butt appeared in a viral video performing prayer while music played in the background.
Following the controversy, Butt released multiple videos in January in which he appeared with religious scholars from different schools of thought and issued an apology, stating that any offense caused by his actions was unintentional and deeply regretted.
