NEW YORK/ISLAMABAD, September 23, 2025 — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reached New York to lead Pakistan’s delegation at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where he will press the world to act on two unresolved tragedies — the crisis in Gaza and the longstanding occupation of Indian-occupied Kashmir.

According to the government, the prime minister will use his address to demand decisive international action to end the suffering of Palestinians and to secure the right of self-determination for Kashmiris.

Pakistan’s Voice at the World Stage

Every September, leaders from across the globe gather in New York for days of high-level speeches. This year, Pakistan says it will ensure that the voices of oppressed peoples are heard loud and clear.

In his address, PM Shehbaz will:

  • Urge the UN to end the bloodshed in Gaza.
  • Call for a just solution to the Kashmir dispute.
  • Highlight Pakistan’s stance on global challenges like climate change, terrorism, Islamophobia, and sustainable development.

A government statement said the prime minister’s participation reflects Pakistan’s deep commitment to multilateralism and the United Nations. It also noted Pakistan’s longstanding contributions toward global peace and development.

Meetings with Global Leaders

The prime minister is accompanied by Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, cabinet members, and senior officials.

During the visit, he will:

  • Attend a special Arab-Muslim summit, co-hosted by the United States and Qatar, where President Donald Trump will also be present.
  • Meet Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker, Kuwait’s Crown Prince and Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid, World Bank President Ajay Banga, and IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva.
  • Exchange views with senior UN officials and reaffirm Pakistan’s readiness to work with all member states to uphold the UN Charter and promote peace.

UNGA Events and Pakistan’s Role

PM Shehbaz will also attend several high-level sessions, including:

  • UN Security Council meetings.
  • A meeting on the Global Development Initiative, focused on building a brighter shared future.
  • A special UN event on climate action, where Pakistan will underscore its frontline role in the climate crisis.

Why It Matters

By taking the stage at UNGA, PM Shehbaz is expected to draw global attention toward the plight of Palestinians and Kashmiris, two struggles often sidelined by international politics. Analysts say Pakistan’s strong stance could strengthen its diplomatic profile and reassert its role as a defender of oppressed peoples.

As Pakistan continues its term as a member of the UN Security Council, the prime minister will stress the need for unity against injustice, urging the world to act before these crises deepen further.
