LONDON, September 21, 2025 — In a dramatic shift of Western foreign policy, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada have formally recognised the State of Palestine, drawing sharp criticism from Israel but widespread praise from Palestinians and their supporters.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the move aimed to “revive hope for peace and a two-state solution,” while Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney pledged partnership in building “a peaceful future for both Palestine and Israel.” Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also reaffirmed that recognition reflected his country’s “longstanding commitment” to Palestinian self-determination.

The step marks the first time G7 nations have extended such recognition, with Portugal expected to follow, and more countries likely to announce support during the UN General Assembly in New York.

President Mahmud Abbas welcomed the recognition, calling it “a necessary step toward achieving a just and lasting peace.” Hamas also hailed the development as a “victory for Palestinian rights.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the decision, arguing it “endangers Israel’s existence” and vowed to oppose it at the UN.
Over 140 UN member states already recognise Palestine, but the latest decision by three major Western powers signals mounting international pressure on Israel amid the ongoing Gaza conflict, which has triggered a humanitarian crisis and growing calls for a ceasefire.
