GB Assembly: Newly elected lawmakers  take oath as new session begins

GILGIT — The newly elected members of the Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) Assembly were formally sworn in on Monday, marking the official commencement of the region’s sixth legislative assembly.

Outgoing Speaker Advocate Nazir Ahmed administered the oath of office to 30 lawmakers during the first session held at the assembly building in Gilgit. The swearing-in ceremony paves the way for the establishment of a new coalition government in the region following the June 7 general elections.

  • A total of 30 newly elected lawmakers took the oath of office during the opening session.
  • The sworn-in members include 21 general seat winners, six women on reserved seats, and three technocrats.
  • Final election results for three remaining general constituencies are still pending due to legal procedures.

Power-Sharing Matrix and Leadership Nominations

Following the oath-taking ceremony, the assembly adjusted its schedule to finalize the upcoming elections for the speaker, deputy speaker, and chief minister positions. Thanks to a strategic alliance formed at the federal level, the majority parties have successfully locked in a smooth power-sharing agreement.

• Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP): 13 seats (Set to lead provincial government).
• Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N): 09 seats (Coalition ally).
• Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party (IPP): 06 seats (Coalition ally).
• Opposition (MWM & Independent): 02 seats.

Under the agreed power-sharing framework, PPP’s Advocate Amjad Hussain is nominated as the consensus candidate for Chief Minister, while Imran Nadeem is expected to take over as Speaker. The PML-N will secure the Deputy Speaker slot with its nominee, Malik Kifayat, ensuring a stable governing alliance for the incoming five-year term.
