Seven Volunteers Killed in Gilgit-Baltistan Mudslide While Repairing Flood-Damaged Drainage

Gilgit-Baltistan – On August 11, 2025, a mudslide in the Danyor area claimed the lives of seven community volunteers who were repairing a drainage channel damaged by recent flash floods.

The incident occurred early Monday morning as the group worked to restore infrastructure destroyed by a glacial lake outburst flood a day earlier. The flood had swollen the Hunza River, damaging the Karakoram Highway—a vital trade and transport link between Pakistan and China.

Three other volunteers were injured and taken to a local hospital for treatment. Local authorities said rescue operations were hampered by unstable terrain and the risk of further landslides.

Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Gulbar Khan paid tribute to the victims, calling them “heroes who sacrificed their lives for the community.” He also directed officials to provide full support to the families of the deceased and the injured.

The tragedy highlights the growing risks posed by climate-induced glacial melt and extreme weather events in Pakistan’s northern regions, where local communities often lead first-response efforts despite limited resources.
