Major Tufail Muhammad’s name remains a symbol of bravery, sacrifice, and duty in Pakistan’s military history. Born in 1914 in Hoshiarpur, British India, Tufail Muhammad was awarded Pakistan’s highest military honor, the Nishan-e-Haider, posthumously. His incredible courage during the 1958 border skirmish in Lakshmipur, East Pakistan, is one of the most remarkable acts of heroism in our military legacy.

A Soldier’s Journey

Tufail Muhammad’s life started under British colonial rule. He joined the Indian Army in 1932 and, by 1943, was commissioned into the 16th Punjab Regiment. When Pakistan was created in 1947, Tufail became part of the newly formed Pakistan Army. Over the years, he served in various roles, and by 1958, he was stationed with the East Pakistan Rifles to safeguard the border areas.

The Battle of Lakshmipur: A Hero’s Stand

In August 1958, Indian forces captured a village in Lakshmipur, a strategic point near the border. Major Tufail Muhammad led a daring assault to reclaim the village on August 7, 1958. With darkness on his side, he split his troops into three groups and advanced towards the enemy’s stronghold.

Despite being struck by three bullets to his stomach, Major Tufail did not retreat. He led from the front, destroying a critical machine gun post with a grenade. In a fierce hand-to-hand battle, he killed the Indian commander with his steel helmet. His strength and determination turned the tide of the battle, and Pakistani forces pushed the enemy back.

However, Tufail Muhammad’s injuries were fatal. He died soon after the battle but not before uttering his final words to a junior officer: “I have completed my duty; the enemy is on the run.” His commitment to his men and mission never wavered, even in his last moments.

Nishan-e-Haider: A Mark of Immortal Bravery

For his extraordinary bravery, Major Tufail Muhammad was posthumously awarded the Nishan-e-Haider, Pakistan’s highest military honor. He is the only recipient of this medal for a skirmish, not a full-scale war, underlining the immense courage displayed in his actions during the Lakshmipur conflict.

The Nishan-e-Haider, made from captured enemy weapons, symbolizes the valor and sacrifice of its recipients. Tufail Muhammad’s legacy serves as a reminder of the true meaning of courage and commitment to one’s country.

Major Tufail Muhammad’s story inspires not only the military but every Pakistani. His bravery shows the power of dedication to duty and the sacrifices made for the nation. Today, as we remember him, we honor not only his heroism but the countless others who have fought to protect Pakistan.
