Karachi, November 5: Police on Wednesday announced the arrest of a suspect for allegedly opening fire on citizens protesting the death of a young man who was struck by a dumper truck in Karachi’s Garden area. The incident had sparked outrage on Tuesday when enraged residents torched the heavy vehicle involved in the fatal crash.
According to police, 23-year-old Shahzeb Shahid was killed and his wife Misbah injured when a dumper truck hit their motorcycle on Nishtar Road in the Ramswami area. In response, local residents set the truck ablaze and gathered in protest, demanding action against the driver and those responsible for reckless driving of heavy vehicles in the city.

South Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Syed Asad Raza said police arrested one suspect — identified as a gunman of Liaquat Mehsud, the Sindh president of the All Dumper Truck Owners Association — for allegedly firing at the protesters. “The weapon used in the firing has been recovered, and raids are being conducted to arrest the association’s president, Liaquat Mehsud,” DIG Raza stated.
Meanwhile, a separate first information report (FIR) was filed against former Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) MPA Kamran Farooqi under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca) and Section 506-B of the Pakistan Penal Code for allegedly threatening Mehsud in a social media post.

According to the FIR, filed by Assistant Sub-Inspector Rao Muhammad Shahrukh, a video surfaced online showing Farooqi saying Mehsud was “fortunate” to have escaped being burned with his vehicle — a remark police said amounted to criminal intimidation and incitement.
Authorities confirmed that two separate cases related to the dumper truck accident and subsequent violence have been registered at the Garden police station. Investigations into both incidents are ongoing as police continue efforts to apprehend all suspects involved.
