KARACHI – At a time when disinformation spreads faster than truth, Pakistan today marks National Newspaper Readership Day 2025. The day, initiated by the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) in 2019, aims to promote credible journalism and counter the chaos of algorithm-driven social media.

Key Highlights of the Day

  • APNS campaign carried slogans like “Read today, lead tomorrow” and “Don’t let an algorithm decide your beliefs”.
  • Leaders across the political spectrum paid tribute to newspapers as trusted platforms of accountability.
  • National focus placed on youth and educational institutions to revive the culture of reading.

Leaders Emphasize Informed Citizenry

President Asif Ali Zardari stressed that an informed citizenry is the foundation of democracy, recalling newspapers’ historic role since the independence movement. He warned that the decline of editorial oversight in the digital era had worsened the spread of propaganda.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised print media professionals for shaping public opinion and urged citizens to develop the habit of daily reading to broaden knowledge and critical thinking.

Provincial Voices

From Punjab to Balochistan, chief ministers highlighted newspapers’ watchdog role, their ability to connect local issues with global debates, and their necessity in combating misinformation. Each called on the youth to embrace disciplined, fact-based reading as part of nation building.

A National Call Against Fake News

APNS President Senator Sarmad Ali described the observance as a “national call to combat fake news.” He urged parents, teachers, and policymakers to guide the next generation toward credible sources of information, reaffirming society’s commitment to responsible journalism and democracy.
